Can foreigners get medical treatment in China?

Yes. Foreign visitors can use hospitals in China, including public hospitals, private hospitals, and international medical departments. The difficult part is usually not whether care exists. It is choosing the right department, preparing records, confirming the appointment route, and navigating language and payment systems.

A valid passport is commonly needed for registration. Requirements still vary by hospital, so confirm the exact process before you book travel.

Choose the hospital route before the flight

China has large public tertiary hospitals, private hospitals, and international medical departments. They are not interchangeable.

Public tertiary hospital

Often strongest for complex specialty departments and high clinical volume. The environment can be busy and many practical steps may be in Chinese.

International medical department

Usually easier for foreign registration and English communication, but service and clinical fees may be higher.

Private or international hospital

Often offers a familiar patient experience and simpler billing, but the best choice still depends on the specialty and case.

The correct starting point is the medical question. A hospital name by itself is not a treatment plan.

What to prepare before medical travel

Short case summaryMain diagnosis or concern, symptoms, previous treatment, medications, allergies, and the decision you need help making.
Recent reportsLaboratory reports, pathology, operative notes, discharge summaries, and physician letters in chronological order.
Imaging filesDICOM files are more useful than screenshots when a specialist needs to review CT, MRI, PET-CT, X-ray, or ultrasound images.
Passport detailsConfirm that the hospital can register your passport and ask whether a translated name or additional identification is needed.
Travel constraintsCurrent country, possible dates, mobility limits, family companion needs, and preferred language.
Payment planAsk what the hospital accepts, whether a deposit is required, and how clinical fees differ from coordination fees.

What happens on appointment day?

A typical hospital visit may include passport registration, a hospital card or patient number, payment, queueing, consultation, tests, another payment step, report collection, and follow-up booking. The exact order varies.

Interpretation is not only about translating a doctor's words. It can also be needed for registration counters, consent documents, payment screens, test preparation, pharmacy instructions, and follow-up reports.

Important: An appointment request is not a guarantee of hospital acceptance, a specific doctor, a specific procedure, or a medical outcome.

How much does medical treatment in China cost?

There is no reliable universal price list. Costs depend on the hospital, department, service channel, tests, diagnosis, inpatient stay, implants or medicines, and whether complications change the plan.

Ask for three separate numbers when possible:

  1. Hospital and physician estimate
  2. Translation and coordination fee
  3. Travel, accommodation, transport, and family support budget

Hospital and physician fees should be paid to the licensed medical institution. China PandaMed quotes coordination and travel support separately.

Why consider Chengdu?

Chengdu is a major western China transport hub with two international airports, a wide range of accommodation, and large medical institutions. For a suitable case, the city can combine specialist access with practical family logistics and a calmer recovery schedule than a compressed multi-city trip.

West China Hospital of Sichuan University has an official English site and an International Medical Center. Its published information includes international appointment contacts, outpatient consultations, and health checkups. Patients should contact the hospital or use an independent coordinator to confirm the correct route for their specific case.

Entry rules, insurance, and emergencies

China's entry and visa policies change by nationality, passport, purpose, and date. Do not assume a tourism or transit rule covers a planned medical visit. Check the official Chinese embassy, consulate, visa center, or National Immigration Administration information before booking.

Official China government update on visa-free access

Confirm international insurance coverage and direct billing with both the insurer and hospital. For an emergency, contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department. China PandaMed is not an emergency service.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreigners go to public hospitals in China?

Yes, but the registration process, passport requirements, language support, and appointment route vary. Confirm the department and process before travel.

Do hospitals in China accept foreign passports?

Many do. The exact identity and registration requirements depend on the hospital and may change, so check directly.

Do I need a medical interpreter?

It depends on the hospital and department. Even when a doctor speaks English, registration, payment, navigation, pharmacy, and report collection may still require Chinese support.

Can I get an appointment before I buy a flight?

An appointment can often be requested before travel, but acceptance, doctor availability, and timing are controlled by the hospital.

Is China PandaMed a hospital?

No. China PandaMed is an independent coordination service. Licensed hospitals and physicians provide all clinical care.

Sources and review standard

This guide separates practical coordination guidance from clinical advice. Time-sensitive entry rules and hospital contacts should always be rechecked with official sources.
